Callaway irons are a golfer's "go-to" golf club for a lot of situations, as they are very versatile. With the right iron, you can go from the fairway to the green...as well as through the rough and the sand (which we naturally try to avoid).
Golf irons are great for those shorter shots from the fairway, when you don't quite need a golf wood. And as you well know, irons are the most useful clubs in your bag.
The Callaway iron allows more advanced players hit lots of different shots with the same club. Ranging from numbers 1 to 9, the golf irons fit the bill for many situations.
The lower numbered irons having lower lofts, which generally means the farther away from the green you are. The higher the number, the greater the loft, and used closer to the green.
As a rough (pardon the pun) guide, the average player may use a 7-iron about 150 yards from the hole, an 8-iron from 140 yards, 9-iron from 130 yards, and so on.
Why the Name "Iron"?
As you probably can guess, irons were originally all made with iron, and hence the name. However, graphite was also introduced as a shaft material. For example, you can find the Callaway Big Bertha shaft made from graphite instead of steel. Graphite is also lighter in weight; a distinct advantage if you are one of the few (at least in my neck of the woods) who carry their clubs instead of using carts.
